In order to provide more stability for HabariProject.org, we're moving our site to new servers. This will not only increase our uptime, but also allow us to be more open with access to various aspects of the server. Openness is one of the core values of the Habari Community and having more involvement from the community with maintenance, features, and development on the servers will help the project grow.

While there may be some hiccups as we move, we hope to get them resolved as soon as possible. This version is a critical security update; all users of any version prior to 0.5.2 should upgrade at once. Additionally users of HEAD should also update to the latest revision.

This update addresses security issues reported at secunia.com, related to unsanitized user input via the URL enabling a "less critical" XSS vulnerability. Using this vulnerability, malicious users could craft an external link that when clicked by a logged-in user could cause harmful data loss. Many bugs were squashed, many tickets closed, and some issues found. In the process, we merged in the schema changes for the upcoming 0.6 release, and planned the future, in a Habari kind of way.

While it was 13 September somewhere in the world, Habari had 63 commits (though some of this was branching and merging fun and games), 12 new tickets and 30 closed tickets. And, as often happens, the momentum continued afterwards, so all in all this week Habari has had 114 commits, 21 new tickets and 34 closed tickets. Not a bad result.

The extras repository has also had a bit of attention, with nine commits, including one new plugin, and one new ticket. Again, the momentum continued, so that this week the extras repository has had 46 commits, including three new plugins to bring it to over 100 plugins now, four new tickets, and one closed. And if the plugin you desperately need isn't there, add a plugin to the wishlist and maybe someone can help you out.

A successful hunt. Of course, the invitation to drop by IRC for a chat is always open. There's always someone there.

Hunt bugs, or just say 'hi'

Our second Bug Hunt is happening this Saturday, 13 September. Your usual host, Sean, is off having a baby, so expect a much lower-quality flashback than usual. Congrats to Sean, and good luck with your new blogger, er, baby!

Our last flashback was a while ago, and time flies fast in Habari-land, so there's plenty of news to report. As we make our approach for the landing of Habari 0.5, activity has increased to a nearly frantic pace. Brace yourselves...

Wiki

This week on the Wiki we opened up the topic of Working Groups, specialized groups working toward a specific goal. We've got one group formed already, the podcasting group, and hopefully they can come up with something workable for PodCamp Ohio, which is now just two weeks away.

We've seen a bit of wiki production in documenting what we're going to do before we do it. There has been positive feedback in IRC on this method of producing documentation. Examples include the recent FormUI revisions, and the brand new Dashboard Modules.

Some other interesting happenings in the wiki take us straight to...

Development Mailing List

It seems there's some interest in producing Chinese translations in the wiki. Ideas for making this the best possible resource for all members of the community have been solicited. Maybe someone should form a Wiki Localization Working Group?

The undertaking to reorganize the -extras subversion repository for community plugins and themes has been accomplished. Heated debates about issues of user privacy took place on IRC and flooded into the mailing list. The requirement for javascript within the admin was discussed, including some ideas about creating a dedicated mobile admin interface.

Users Mailing List

Comparatively fewer messages have been trickling into the user list, but this is bound to change as Habari inevitably gains more user share.

The Solaris distribution continues to confound developers with its inability to support the PHP glob() function the same way as other platforms.

New plugins were released, including Date Ninja, a plugin that makes date entry on posts easier. New plugins for displaying the most recent entries from audioscrobbler and jaiku were also released.

Naranja, a new theme, was announced on the user list, as well as a theme named Aligned.

Code Stats

JibbyBot (our resident bot on Freenode IRC's #habari channel) reports that Habari has had 342 commits, 133 new tickets, and 123 closed tickets this month. That's a good bit of progress toward our 0.5 release. Enjoy!

Wiki

This week, on the Wiki more progress was made in documenting all of the various classes in Habari with the additions of CronTab and CronJob entries.

User Mailing List

On the habari-user list, help was given with using alternate languages in Habari as well as calling custom functions based on page slug.

Developer Mailing List

The habari-dev list was home to talk of adding color to the new administration system. The beginings of translation efforts for Habari were covered. Also, the some discussion of policy issues for Habari were brought up.

Issue Tracker

Once again we had a busy week on the issue tracker. The bulk of the issues reported relate to the merge of Monolith with core as we refine the administration of Habari. Additionally efforts towards internationalization continued with work on the translation of K2, as well as an addition to the FormUI functions.

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
Spread the News!
